Digitization and application of geodata in inland navigation

DigiShip

The ZIM innovation network “DigiShip” aims to develop digital, geodata-based technologies for inland navigation that contribute to strengthening network stability in the entire waterway system. In the network, small and medium-sized enterprises work together with research institutions on innovative solutions in funded R&D projects. This includes digital concepts and business models, as well as the development of cross-modal digital platforms that develop answers to the need for modernization in inland navigation.

ZIM-cooperation network

Prerequisites for the success of this sector are an efficient infrastructure, environmentally friendly and modern ships, and optimal integration into multimodal logistics chains. In this context, inland shipping is not only a reliable and flexible transport system, but remains by far the most environmentally friendly mode of transport with major advantages in the transportation of hazardous goods. In addition, the share of sport and leisure shipping is also constantly increasing, which suggests the operational use of traffic management systems as well as individual navigation assistants.

Key projects:

  • Improve transportation management systems
  • Further development of real-time evaluation methods
  • New methods in the field of automated and connected driving
  • River Information Services (RIS)
  • Further development of information retrieval systems (Big Data) + machine learning
  • Use of mobile networked information and assistance systems in the water sports sector
  • Further development of interfaces
